Steer Tailing

rodeo2

A weird assignment. I had to go shoot a “birthday party” which was also a rodeo. Steer tailing is when you try to flip over a steer by the tail while you’re on horse back. It’s apparently popular event in Mexico but some Minnesota counties and other states have banned it.

This event took place on private property. The poor family who neighbors this property generally had to deal with loud music until the wee hours as well as watch these cowboys repeatedly pull on these steers tails. They called some animal rights activists and the Star Tribune.

The folks who enjoy doing this said that this is a part of their culture and tradition and to ban it is discriminatory.  Is it any different and any other rodeo event? There were tons of kids  who were watching and if they were old enough they were participating.

After spending a bit of time there I was able to get closer to the action. It was interesting watching how they released steers. There was one big guy who looked like he was in charge. He was the one who held the steers back in the pen and then would pull the gate open to let them through. Right by the pen was a rather large bottle of tequilla and a few cans on beer. there was also a gaggle of young men watching the action from backstage and occasionally helping.

Running with video tape

IMG_3602.JPG

Who knew that finding a VHS tape could be so fun. On our walk down by the Mississippi, William found this beaten up tape. He thought it was a video game. I tried to explain that you watch movies on it but that just didn’t stick. All he wanted to do is unravel the tape inside.
So he would hand the end of the tape to me or Meghan and would run ahead. We were the ones stuck with winding it up. Runners and walkers would go by. Some smiling and laughing and some annoyed as he tried to empty the cartridge.
William at the end wound up wrapping some of the tape around himself while dragging it down the road. Too funny!

Finish line counting

IMG_3428.JPGSometimes  WIlliam and I bike over to St. Thomas football field. To see the big boys play and to run around on the field. After biking over, running along parts of the track, and running the stairs he runs a 100 yard dash. I time him. He ran it in 32.2 seconds. Then stood there and read the numbers after his race.

Making ravioli!!

IMG_3516.JPGSo while William and my mom were in Maryland, I went food-making crazy! I love to cook but don”t always have the time to really experiment the way I want to. I took off that whole week while they were gone and made a bunch of ravioli and put up fresh veggies for the winter. Pure bliss. I didn’t get to make everything I wanted. I still have ginger apple tarts in my head and chocolate raspberry ice cream but those will come soon. I hope. This is mushroom, basil and ricotta being assembled. The next would be corn, bacon, ricotta and basil. Yum!
